Merrymaking

This radial design is created from found and handmade papers, some intricately cut. It also includes acrylic paint, thread, and recycled student artwork. The stitched and painted collage pieces experiment with ideas surrounding routines, rhythms, and cycles common of everyone, especially mothers. Small bits of paper parallel a mother’s life-they are flexible and can be moved and layered as needed. If a section of the piece isn’t visually pleasing, it can be covered over or reworked. The threads both literally and figuratively binds the work as a mothers binds her family. The stitching gives a nod to traditional women’s work and the patterns and textures of sewn and woven textiles. Ultimately, the pieces are meant to evoke joy and curiosity and reminds us of the inspiring parts of our own life.
