Haunting Seas

This area of Iceland is an eerie study in the haunting spectacle of nature with its sudden and dramatic shifts in tides and the roaring, might waves of the Atlantic Ocean. This photo was taken with a long exposure which made the patterns of waves against the black sand and the ominous looking clouds look evermore dramatic. Choosing black and white also adds to the power of the landscape. According to folklore, the towering basalt columns in the distance were once trolls trying to drag a passing ship from the ocean to the shore. The tale says the trolls went out too late into the night and didn't realize the sun was rising. as dawn broke on the horizon the trolls turned to stone.
